Adorable Red is looking for the perfect forever home! If you are looking for a big silly guy who loves to play, be around other dogs, and go out and about around town with you, look no further! Red could be the one for you.
Red is a typical 2-year-old Frenchie and has the personality of a puppy/toddler. Meaning that if it is on the ground, it is in his mouth and he just loves to play, play, play. He will settle down for a nap, but he is an active young boy. His favorite things are playing in the yard with other dogs and then lounging on the patio in the sun with his Nylabone. He lies on his blanket on the floor and is content with his toys for hours. Red also loves to go out to events with his foster family and is very social.
Red is housebroken and crate trained. He is very smart and knows "sit" and "stay." It would be great for his training to continue in a training class with his new family. Red is such a large and powerful bulldog, in body as well as personality that he has to have adults that are not push overs, who understand bulldog boundaries, and who have consistent rules. His new family cannot have young children that live in the home, but it is ok to have older children that come to visit. Red does well with kitties and just loves other dogs. In fact, preference will be given to applicants with at least one other dog who enjoys playtime. Red has brachycephalic airway syndrome, so his new family will need to make sure that he wears a harness and not a choke chain/collar when going for walks.
The perfect family and home for Red could be with a single person or with a couple. His new home must have other playful dogs and a fenced yard. He really needs a fenced yard to continue his routine. He loves to explore and run around with other dogs. His new family does not have to work from home; he does fine at home with other dogs during the day. After he has gone through some additional obedience training, he would make a great office dog. Right now he is young and he would rather spend his day with a fur sibling.
There are a couple things about Red that his new family should know. During feeding time, Red's new owners will need to feed him in a separate area or room away from other dogs. He is very gentle taking any treats, but he is food aggressive at his bowl when you try and take it away during or after feeding. Additionally, Red cannot have any squeaky toys because he gets aggressive when playing with them. He is fine with other toys and does not try and take them from the other dogs. Red also still has that puppy tendency to want to chew on your fingers for comfort, so he needs to be closely watched around children he may encounter at the park or on walks.
Like many Frenchies, Red has some allergies. He is currently on medication for his allergies and his new owners will need to continue this care longterm. Red also eats a limited ingredient diet and has special medicated shampoo that helps keep him itch free. His new family will need to continue to manage his allergies with regular vet visits and medications throughout his life. Additionally, Red was born with hip dysplasia and needs supplements to keep his joints healthy. He needs regular check ups to monitor the condition. Red also has a diagnosis of brachycephalic airway syndrome. This syndrome commonly occurs in flat faced dog breeds. While in foster care Red had nare and palate surgery to help him breathe easier, which has greatly improved his breathing. Due to his diagnosis, Red's new family should only walk him with a harness and not a collar or choke collar to prevent collapsing his trachea, which would likely result in his death.
Red's foster family had this to share about him:
Red is one of the most beautiful Frenchies I have ever had. He is strong willed and so smart. I truly feel like I have a 2-year-old toddler in my house except smarter! He has learned so much over the last few months and he has been so much fun to love and see him learn new things every day. He is always at my feet and wants to be part of the action in whatever I'm doing. He is my first Frenchie who has loved water and loves his baths. Get ready to have a bathroom buddy when you take a shower or bath who's ready to lap up some water when you are not watching! I would love to see him in obedience training classes to foster his intelligence. I think he could be a star student!
If you would like to adopt Red, be prepared to travel. Red is a foster in North Central Texas and will not be shipped. He is too big to fly, but he loves road trips!
FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo, so adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family.
FBRN dogs are in foster care in people's private homes. For the foster families' safety, we do not disclose specific locations, and we don't set up meet and greets prior to applications. For detailed information about the dogs in our care, please read the extensive bios on each dog.
Red's allergies are managed with regular Cytopoint shots, his current diet, and regular medicated baths. He has a history of skin infections to keep an eye out for and your vet can advise you about symptoms to watch for.
Red has brachycephalic airway syndrome. He had nares and palate resection, saccules removed and was neutered in May 2019. He must wear a harness when going for walks, never a collar or choke chain.
Red also had surgery to repair a cherry eye in May this year.
Red has signs of hip dysplasia that must be monitored regularly by a veterinarian.
Red is a resource guarder so must never be around small children and must be fed separately from other dogs--not just across the room, but in a separate room or in his crate. He must be monitored during feeding and when toys are present. He can't have squeaky toys because they are a trigger for his naughty guarding behavior.
Red would benefit from continued obedience training.
