10/19/11 Pixie has crossed the Rainbow Bridge

Note from her Foster Mom - Pixie is doing well. She has poor lung capacity caused by untreated respiratory infections in the past. I have had a few close calls with her breathing, and I had to rush her to emergency for some time in an oxygen tent. She is now taking theophyline, enalapril, and prednisone by way of an inhaler. She also has an albuterol inhaler, just in case. I keep a close eye on the color of her gums (must be bubblegum pink) and her breathing. She sleeps with me. In August 2006, Pixie was rescued. She most likely came from (or escaped from or was abandoned by) a puppy mill or back yard breeder. She was very thin and had skin infections and ear infections and eye problems. Today she is plump and sassy. Did I say sassy? I call her Big Momma (she weighs all of 17 lbs.) She has all the attitude and confidence of a big city tart. She is the boss here and everybody knows it. It doesn't take long for the newbies to find that out. Mostly she just uses her eye power. However, puppies and kittens are excused. They get to do what they like, except eat her food. She always plays with Pooter, even after the other adult dogs have gotten tired of him and shooed him away.

Pixie is the biggest snorter and grunter I have ever met. She also uses sneezes to punctuate her "old sea dog" language. When I am slow getting their food, she barks at me and blows her nose a couple of times to tell me to "get with it". She is also very stubborn. Every night she places herself right where I'm going to sleep and she refuses to move. I have to push her over, but that's not so easy. Somehow she digs her feet in and starts a hail of loud protesting snorts and grunts. When I finally get her moved over, her ears are drooping and she is making little "poor me" grunts and whimpers. She is such a cute, funny little girl. She never hurries, she just stomps along. She isn't afraid of anything. She loves people. She ignores my big cats, lets my foster kittens play over her and gets along with the other dogs. When I introduce a new dog, I always do Pixie first. She is a huge character! She has an opinion on everything. I love that little snorter to bits!!!
