"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."
Little Brie came into the yard of a kind woman in Kansas. She was filthy, emaciated, and suffering. The kind woman took her to the doctor who did what he could to alleviate her immediate pain, and the kind woman called us to see if we would bring Brie into our care.
Naturally, we said yes. She spent her first two days in foster care sleeping on or next to a person. She ate good food. She cannot eat kibble because she does not have teeth fit for chewing. We suspect she is a dog dumped on a roadway by a puppymiller. The lack of teeth, the longstanding and untreated health problems, the emaciation and lack of socialization all point not to a beloved pet lost in the prairie vastness, but a discarded breeder, past her productive years, set loose to starve on the windy, frozen plains.
Brie's ears are so infected, filthy and scarred that she will have to be sedated to have them cleaned enough that they can be examined. They may be entirely closed. They are cauliflowered from hematomas, probably the result of fights in tight quarters. She has neurosclerosis of the eye, not cataracts, as we had feared. Her eyes are clouded over. The vet estimates her age at ten years.
Brie is gaining weight. She is plumping up after being dehydrated, and she is also putting on flesh at the rate of about a pound every 3 or 4 days. She is learning to play with the resident Frenchies and she is quickly getting the hang of life inside the house. This toothless, half-blind, bag of bones is winning the hearts of even the least easily won over. She is sleeping in a soft, warm bed.
She is not healthy enough to be spayed, and her foster family is worried that she may be coming into season. However, this may be the first time in ten years that Brie will not be bred.
If you have a soft spot for the old girls and you'd like to offer our wandering angel some of life's sweetness after all her bitter years, please click on her photo and donate to her care.
