Velamint has retired from her former life as a breeder. Vela is a lovely, quiet lady seeking a lovely, quiet forever home full of walks, belly rubs, long naps and people who adore her. She makes it easy to love her!

Vela is house broken and crate trained. She enjoys her crate and never whines or barks. Velamint mostly likes being with her person and resting near them. She has bouts of activity, especially after being crated and in the early morning after she wakes up. She always greets her person with a happy face and a wagging tush.

Velamint has gotten along wonderfully with the two dogs in her foster home after slow introductions. She initiates play with the resident two-year-old Frenchie and they have a grand time wrestling, rolling and playing chase. She has also enslaved the resident Chihuahua and allows him to bathe her and clean her ears. Velamint has, however, been deemed the "old mama police" to many who have witnessed her interactions with other dogs. She won’t allow any play unless it is on her terms and will bark and eventually try to stop it. She would do best as an only dog or with an older respectful, laid back male. More than one dog in her household may overexcite her and bring out her snarky behavior. Her owner needs to be a strong pack leader and gain her trust before introducing her to another dog.

Velamint cannot be housed with cats. She has a very high prey drive and as far as she’s concerned, ALL FELINES ARE PREY! She would easily kill a cat if given the opportunity. (She currently lives in a home with two cats and has tried to seriously injure both cats.) Similarly, if there are outdoor cats in the vicinity, adopters must have a fenced yard to prevent Vela from running into traffic while chasing them.

Despite her years of producing puppies, Vela is healthy. She shows some weakness in her hind legs but nothing that stops her from daily activities. She does not jump up on furniture. She does fine on one or two steps leading into the house, but she has not tried to go up a full flight of stairs. A one-level situation would be best for her. While Vela would love a stay-at-home person of her own, she would do fine with people who work and can give her a mid-day potty break, or she could go to work with someone as long as there were no cats in the office.

We asked her foster mom what type of home would be best for Vela. “I would like a home where Vela's forever people are interested in spending all her days enjoying her. She has spent her younger years producing puppies and now is her time to enjoy the benefits of being retired. She needs to wake up seeing her people's happy faces greeting her, days filled with walks and sunshine and a big comfy fluffy pillow bed to curl up in. Velamint has not been with us very long, but I learned very quickly how loving she is to her people. She enjoys being everywhere I am. She follows me around from room to room and always knows where I am. I am going to miss my little shadow! She has been very easy to foster. She is reserved yet her bursts of play are so cute. She likes to nibble on my chin to show affection and thoroughly enjoys her long belly rubs. For all that this retired lady has been through she has shown resilience. She deserves a wonderful life of peace and rest and that is all I want for her. She has so much to offer and so much to teach a willing heart.

Velamint is refreshing herself in Georgia. She will not be shipped.
