Our gorgeous and unsinkable Twila came to us following a paralyzing back injury. (We really cannot stress enough how important it is to your Frenchie’s health NOT to allow jumping off furniture, decks, or heights. Frenchies are simply not built for jumping! We are seeing a great many spinal injury Frenchies coming to rescue, and it is breaking our hearts!)

Twila gets along wonderfully with kids and other dogs (except aggressive ones. She stands her ground!) She is a totally adaptable girl, she likes to scoot around in her cart, but she’ll also lie beside you for hours or spend the afternoon blissfully gnawing her nylabone.

Twila is generally healthy, but like many spinal injury patients, she has difficulty emptying her bladder completely, and when she gets excited she can dribble. As a result, she is prone to UTI’s. Potential adopters will quickly learn the art of assisting Twila to empty her bladder. It’s not hard. She wears a diaper. Twila is crate-trained and has no problem being crated.

Twila is food aggressive—that’s her food, mister, and don’t you try to sneak any of it! Feeding her in her crate or away from other dogs is the quick and easy fix. From time to time, Twila will guard her toys or become demanding when another dog is getting attention. These behaviors are easily corrected by putting all the toys away, and not allowing Twila to call the cuddling shots. She does love her stuffies and chew toys, and if you’d like to spend time training Twila beyond the basic obedience she has now, rewarding her with a favored stuffy would be ideal.

Her foster mom had this to say about what she imagines Twila’s home would be like: I would like to see her in a home that has some knowledge of working with a dog that is paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Not treat her like she is disabled but a real part of the family. Her disabilities do not slow her down one bit. She loves children so having an older child that understands her injuries and condition would be an asset.

Here’s what our ideal home for Twila would look like:

A home all day person who can look after Twila’s specific needs, or a home where Twila’s bladder can be emptied no less than every 6 hours during the day.

In the right circumstances, Twila would make an excellent go-to-work dog, and is particularly well-suited to a job as a greeter.

Twila adores kids, so a family with an older child who can learn about her special needs and be tender with her would be ideal.

We give preferences to homes with fenced areas. Twila doesn’t need much room, but she loves to be outside.

Finally, her foster mom wanted to let potential applicants know this about our sweet T:

“Twila is a very sweet girl that absolutely loves people. She has a zest for life like no other dog I have seen. She lives life to the fullest and is so grateful for everything. She has a smile on her face from sun up to sun down. If you are looking for a great companion dog, then Twila is the one for you. Her world revolves around her people. She has adjusted to her paralysis very well, and if you ask her she will tell you, she is not disabled! She just moves and dances in a different way than the rest of us do. She has not let her injury slow her down at all.”

If you think you could be worthy of this beauty’s love, fill out an application and tell us why your home is the best place for her. If you are selected to adopt our Twila, you must plan on coming to dance her home from North Florida with you.
