Tonto: "Me Tonto - your friend. You not forget - one chance in million better than none. There always chance, if you not give up."

Our Tonto found his one in a million chance when one of the caped FBRN crusaders spotted him sitting in an animal shelter. It seemed that Tonto's previous owner had died and the family members had chosen to leave the faithful companion alone at the shelter. After Tonto escaped with our Crusader on what passed for Silver, he arrived at his wonderful foster family's homestead. Here he has received the love and care that this faithful companion deserves. He is now ready to find a new Lone Ranger to call friend and sidekick for the rest of his days.

Tonto is a 6-year-old neutered male. Aside from a bum leg that gives him a limp after too much wrasslin' or jumping, he is very healthy. He had his nares and palate resected earlier this spring and has some mild arthritis that his foster mom treats as needed.

He is housebroken, but like any free spirit, prefers not to be crated. He is learning to accept it, however. His foster mom is also working on some basic commands. A fenced in yard is preferred since Tonto enjoys his rambles around the yard. However, with the right family, he could make do with a nice leisurely walk several times a day if it's not too hot. He will also try to protect his foster mom if he thinks the resident frog is playing too rough, so no other dogs should live in his home. Kids don't seem to bother him, although he has only been around those that are over 10 years.

Tonto would love coming to work with you. His foster mom often works from home and he just lies by her as she does her work. He does need someone home with him, but really, who would expect Tonto to want to live alone? Those who live in a condo or apartment should be aware that his foster family is working with him on separation anxiety. His anxiety manifests itself in significant vocalization--we don't think he'd be a good choice for a family that shares a wall. Also, though he'd be a fantastic receptionist at your workplace, he does have a tendency to be reactive when he meets other dogs at Petsmart or out on rambles. His adoptive family should be willing to work with a trainer to minimize and desensitize him to other dogs--Tonto should not be allowed to own the world or his people. Guarding behavior tends to progress, so it must be nipped in the bud. He might be able to live happily with a submissive female, but we’ll be looking for someone who has dog experience and a firm but loving approach to helping Tonto understand that he is not the Big Man he aspires to be.

Tonto's foster mom has this to say: " Tonto is a great little guy and would make someone a very happy owner. He just wants to be loved and it's hard not to fall in love with him. He's the cutest when he wants his belly scratched and he will paw at your hand until you do it, and then when you stop he will do it again. He really doesn't require a lot of work and is just happy to be by your side."

If you are looking for a faithful companion to be by your side, fill out an application and tell us why. Tonto is enjoying summer in South Carolina; plan on joining him there as he will not be shipped.
