Sarah May is a sweet lass who was surrendered by a breeder and brought into our care. She is quite a doll and a joy in her foster home. But it’s time for her to move on, to find her place in the world, and meet the forever family of her dreams.
Sarah May recently recovered from a minor surgery to remove an abcess between her toes. This was the second such issue she’s had since coming into foster care, and she's likely to see a recurrence of that issue. Her new family should keep an eye on her little piggies so they can be taken care of should an abcess come back. Sarah May also has a weak back end. She wobbles a little when she walks and a lot when she runs. The vet said she has a slight neuropathy and does not expect her condition to worsen. Like humans who nerves don’t fully develop, they learn how to live with it. With exercise and good food, the vet expects her strength to continue to improve. Even since she came into foster care, she has shown dramatic improvements in her abilities to jump, stand, and run, so we predict an excellent future for this little bundle of wonderful.
Sarah May loves everyone she meets, and she hasn’t let anything slow her down or dampen her spirits. She thinks kids are the cat’s pajamas and enjoys the company of children of all ages. She also just adores her doggie pals. Although she loves all other dogs she’s met, she does have a particular special friend in a resident female Frenchie in her foster home. These two ladies run around and play all day, take a break for a quick nap together, then go back to playing some more. Sarah May is a playful, happy, energetic girl, and a playmate is crucial to her continued happiness. It’s also a great way for her to get exercise and strengthen her back end.
Sarah May is a typical Frenchie—always keeps you laughing! She is very active and will get into trouble if not monitored, but she can be easily redirected to an appropriate chew toy. Although Sarah May is five years old, she behaves very much like a puppy and should be treated like the naughty little treasure that she is. She needs someone who will be firm but gentle and give her lots and lots of snuggles. She is a very gentle and loving girl and likes nothing better than to cuddle on the couch or in the bed.
Sarah May is still like a puppy when it comes to housebreaking. She will have accidents if she isn’t monitored, but if she’s on a consistent schedule, she’s very successful. This includes potty breaks first thing in the morning and potty breaks after eating and playtime. Of course, lots of praise and affection are in order when she has success. Sarah May needs patience, and she will repay you a thousandfold with love, light, and laughter. Sarah May is crate trained and sometimes likes to go into her crate for some afternoon lounging. She does best in a crate when she needs to be left alone. Sarah May is a quick learner and has already learned “out”, “come”, “get in your bed”, and “let’s go potty”. She also knows “no” but does suffer from short-term memory loss, as do most dogs worth their salt.
Although Sarah May does very well in her kennel, 8 hours a day is a long time for an active girl like her. Her ideal home would have someone available during the day to give her potty and play time. If her parents could not be home during the day, then a safe place for her to hang out with her buddy is a must. Sarah May could adapt to nearly any living environment, but she must never be allowed to run loose without being in an enclosure or on a leash. She’s still learning to come when called, and any dog who sees something particularly enticing is likely to temporarily lose her hearing.
Sarah May's foster mom says it best: "From the minute Sarah May got to our house, she won us all over. At first she was too weak to jump on the couch, now she stands on her hind legs to be held. She is a true lover. Sometimes I take naps with her and she snuggles under my arm and lays her head on my shoulder. She is very trusting and very sweet. Our dogs are accustomed to strange dogs showing up occasionally, but from the beginning they all fell in love with her. Our 8 year old German Shepherd will lay down and put her entire head in his mouth. When she sits still he removes his mouth. Then, she slings her paw across his face and they go at it again. Sometimes she will chase him around the room grabbing his back ankles in her mouth. This dog loves to play! She is so funny we will watch her for what seems like hours."
If you think you can handle this much cute all tied up with a ribbon of eternal love and loyalty, apply for Sarah May now. She can’t wait to make your life a little brighter. Remember, she’s being fostered in Arkansas and won’t be shipped, so start planning your trip!
