Please read the puppy mill info page before applying for Sandy.
A member of the Missouri Five, Sandy was a breeding dog until she retired from puppy-making. Since she has been in foster care, Sandy has taken quite well to her new life. She has spent many days sunbathing on the deck with her foster sisters! Ah, as life should be for this sweet brindle girl. Though Sandy was not a "puppy mill" dog in that the conditions of her kennel were clean and she was often invited into the house, she was not a full-time pet, so we are asking applicants to read the puppy mill article before filling out an application, in order to be prepared for the special issues dogs raised in kennels may present.
Sandy has a wonderful temperament and is easygoing. She has not shown any aggression while in foster care. She is quite laid-back, and sometimes even shy. But, Sandy loves other dogs and seems to be making up for lost playtime! One of her favorite activities is to run around with other dogs in the backyard. In foster care, her playmates have all been her size, so it is not known how she would do around larger dogs. Sandy has been around both boy and girl dogs and has done fine with both. Sandy does not display dominant traits; she will easily give up a toy to another dog.
Sandy has been spayed while in foster care, and her wellness check has revealed her to be in good health. Like all Frenchies, Sandy will need to be monitored for the health problems that plague this breed, including back injuries, bad hips, allergies, and the tendency to overheat. But currently, Sandy has no known health problems.
Sandy is still learning to not get into things that are not given to her—if anything is left lying on the floor (a Kleenex, cell phone, shoes, you name it!) she will chew, shred and run off with it if she gets a chance. Sandy may be a good motivation for keeping your floors clean of clutter! The girl loves her Nylabones, and will chase a ball or chew on a Kong filled with treats or peanut butter.
Sandy is quite good about taking her business outside, but needs to be let out frequently (after naps, eating, playing, etc.) or she will have an accident. Sandy needs a family or person who will be patient as she continues her housetraining and who will be mindful of her need to go outside. She is crate trained and has had no accidents in her crate while in foster care.
Sandy’s ideal home is one that includes at least one other dog, and a person or family who has the time to devote to her. It would be preferable is someone was home either part-time or full-time, as Sandy craves the attention of her human companions. If her person or people must work, Sandy would make an ideal office dog; she has such a sweet personality and likes everyone she meets. Accompanying her person to work would also build Sandy’s confidence and help her to be more outgoing.
Sandy gets scared with quick movements and loud noises. Given her tendency to pick things off the floor for a good chew, if there are kids in her new home they must be a little older (12+) and dog-savvy too. Sandy does not have experience with cats or small animals, so per FBRN’s policy, she will need to go to a cat-free home. This girl also really needs her chance to run and play outside, so a fenced yard is a must for her (and this will also greatly help with her housetraining.)
Her foster mom has this to say about her, “Sandy has been an enjoyable house guest from day one. She is a very sweet and loveable dog. She doesn't ask for much other than love, playtime and snuggling close with her humans at night in bed. (No, I don't think this girl will want to sleep in a crate now that she has had a taste of the GOOD life!) In the eight weeks that we have had her we have seen quite a transformation and would love to see her continue to grow. Also this girl knows what T R E A T S are, so stock up!”
Sandy is being fostered in Minnesota, where she is running around the yard, sunbathing on the deck, and enjoying her treats. Sandy would gladly ride in your car or be tucked in a Sherpa under your plane seat to her new home—but she will not be shipped!
