Update 7/17/08
Poor Ramsey is currently struggling with a skin flare-up that will delay his move to a forever home. Ramsey's foster mom is in close contact with his vet, and they are both absolutely dedicated to getting him back to feeling great. The poor little frog has been very itchy, and has been scratching and biting himself to bits trying to relieve it. We hope to have this resolved soon so Ramsey can be off to his new life.

Ramsey came to us following his elderly owner's death.

Ramsey has been treated for allergies since he has been in foster care. Evidently his allergies had affected his left ear, for which he had surgery while with his owners. He is currently on a reduced dose of 2 herbs through Dr. Wen on Long Island, who practices both Eastern and Western Veterinary medicines. It is hoped that he maintains on this dose. He is also on a strict diet of no grains, sweet potato and venison. He can have treats of the same, & banana, apple and ham. He continues to chew on his feet, but the Dr. believes that it is behavioral as there is no inflammation or infection. It's probably become a habit from being itchy for so long.

Ramsey is wary of children. Not frightened, but also not friendly. We think he'd be happiest in a home that is free of kids. He's been fine around the resident 16 year old kitty, showing only minor interest, and is content to leave her alone when she hisses.

Ramsey is dog tolerant, but not dog friendly, as he doesn't seek out play with the 2 resident male Boxers, and has actively avoided a young and playful female Frenchie who initiated play.

In terms of his personality, his foster mom has this to say about him: "Ramsey is a hard fella to pigeon-hole. I would say that he is insecure-dominant. He's the type that will get in your face, all false bravado, when feeling insecure. He will puff up and move forward. On two occasions, he has snapped when strangers approached him too quickly and got in his space. He needs time to warm up to people. I think he's a sweet, funny guy, but he is my first Frenchie foster, so he's got me bewitched with his Frenchie-ness. He's low level energy and very well behaved. He doesn't get into mischief at all. However, he does patrol the property when outside and has a hard time relaxing. Other times, he is aloof and indifferent. I keep expecting for him to break out of his shell and emerge as the fun-loving 3 year old dog that he is. It's as though he is carrying a burden…perhaps mourning the loss of his master. He may not have been properly socialized as a youngster. He acts older than his age."

Ramsey is housebroken and crate-trained, and hasn't been officially obedience trained, but he is well-mannered. He sits for his dinner and leash and takes treats gently. He doesn't jump up unless you invite him to.

Ramsey enjoys his walks, tearing up stuffies, Nylabones and one on one playtime. However, his periods of play are short-lived.

Here's what we are looking for for Ramsey: A good home for Ramsey would be an adult home with no intention of having children, or with grown children. If grandchildren are involved, I would advise caution. Ideally, he could go to a home that is somewhat active and would include him. I think he's been used to having his people around. Frenchie experience is preferred, and also someone that understands pack order and has strong leadership to relieve him of his insecurities. Another dog is not needed, but a laid-back, older dog without issues would probably be ok.

We'd like him to go to a home where someone can be with him all or most of the day, but a midday visit from a pet-sitter could work He's not a good candidate for going to work with you. A house with a fenced yard is ideal. He does bark when he hears unfamiliar noises (cars, voices, etc.), so I don't know how he would be in an apt., if the owners weren't home.

Here are some final words from Ramsey's foster mom:

Ramsey has been a complete joy to foster, as he is my first Frenchie. He has opened my eyes to the very special world that revolves around this breed! He makes me laugh every day. He makes all kinds of snorty, funky noises, but with all that, the bonus is that he doesn't snore! Even if he doesn't snuggle, I still adore him. I admit, I "force-snuggle" twice a day, as I can't resist his cuteness. He stoically puts up with it for about 30 seconds, which makes me love him more for being so patient with me! Try as I may, I still haven't been able to "crack" this nut. I know there is so much more life in this beautiful boy. I know there is the perfect match that he can connect with…someone that can put the light back in his eyes, spring in his step and make his tail wag on a daily basis. He wagged his tail once for me, so I know he can do it. As long as he is in my care, I will continue to try to make that nub move!

Ramsey is patiently awaiting the people for whom he'll wag his nub in foster care on Long Island, New York. Potential adopters should be prepared to take the L.I.R.R., L.I.E., or one of the ferries to fetch him, since he won't be shipped.
