Popeye was rescued by a Good Samaritan who found herself with too much on her shoulders. We are so glad she let us help!
Popeye is mostly deaf, but can hear some noises. While at FBRN he had nare and palate surgery to help his breathing. His breathing has improved drastically but he should still be watched closely in hot weather. He suffers from very bad allergies, made worse in warm weather, which cause re-occurring ear infections. We would like him to be adopted by someone who is willing to do more in-depth allergy testing, and who can afford his prescription food and pills each month.
Popeye is fine with kids, but he has no particular love for them. The same is true of dogs.
His activity level is low. Popeye is pretty laid-back. He really enjoys short walks, but nothing over a mile. He is most content just hanging out with his owner.
Though Popeye is crate trained and housebroken, he occasionally marks indoors when not supervised. Popeye should be crated while you are gone, and would prefer to sleep in bed with you at night, but he should be able to sleep in his crate in your room, if you are not a "dog sleeps in the bed with me" kind of person, otherwise he suffers separation anxiety.
Popeye is very responsive to hand gestures but has had no formal training. Many trainers are qualified to help with training deaf dogs, and it's no more difficult than training hearing dogs--but it is much more important, as you can imagine. Popeye loves toys he can chew or stretch or pull apart!
Here's what we are looking for in a forever family for Popeye: Popeye would do well in most situations but he does have slight limitations due to being deaf and his allergies. He would be a good city dog because he does not require a yard and will go to the bathroom just about anywhere. He prefers to have his owners near him at all times. We would prefer someone who can be around most of the time.
Someone should come home at midday to let him potty. You could take him to work, but if you have to leave your office, he could be disruptive.
A fenced yard is generally required for a deaf dog. If you live in a townhouse or an area that prohibits fences, be sure to explain in your application how you plan to keep Popeye safe.
Here is a final message from Popeye's loving foster mom: "Popeye is the sweetest dog I have EVER met, not to mention one of the most handsome! His personality and temperament are perfect. He is silly and loving and just wants to be loved back. Everyone who meets him, loves him. However, he does have his challenges, but once you understand them, they are easy to overcome. He is deaf and does not like his owner to be out of his sight. He will need to adjust to his new environment and does best with routine. After he adjusts to his new environment his separation anxiety decreases significantly. He needs to go to the bathroom often due to his medication. He would prefer to sleep in your bed, but he will sleep in his crate next to your bed.
Popeye would also very much appreciate someone who will be patient with his allergies. He is one itchy frog and needs medication and prescription food. He would also like an owner who is willing to put more time and testing into what is causing his allergies, so maybe one day he can stop his medication."
Popeye is looking for his next can of spinach in Indiana, and if you want him, you'll have to plan on going after him. We won't ship this handsome hard of hearing frog.
