Polly came to FBRN following her purchase at an auction. She is a healthy girl, currently recovering from her spay surgery.
Polly is a high-energy Frenchie. She requires exercise to be happy. She gets some exercise chasing and playing and being silly with the other Frenchies in her foster home (she adores all the Frenchies! She'd probably be great with any dog about her size), but she'll need playtime and walks in her new home.
Polly is curious and she is SMART! Combine curiosity, intelligence and lots of energy and you have a formula for trouble! Adopters should be aware that this girl has got to have a patient, attentive and calm family. She is very sensitive, and loud or angry corrections hurt her feelings. She is currently being trained to respond to treats and squeaky toys.
Polly is learning about proper pottying. After two years in a cage, it will be an ongoing process to reinstill the instinct for cleanliness. We are working on it. Adoptive families should expect to continue to work on it. Polly doesn't really like being in a crate, but she'll do it. Now that she has had a taste of freedom, she sometimes gets a bit vocal about the return to durance vile in the crate. However, considering the formula for trouble above (c + i + e = T!), crating her while you are away is a good idea if you value your belongings.
Temperamentally speaking, Polly will occasionally put on airs and try to dominate the other foster girl in her foster home, but then she'll roll over and wave her paws in the air and play, so we think it's mostly a gesture, and not meant to be a serious attempt at a coup. She can protect her crate at meal times, but hey. That's her food. We know plenty of people who wrap an arm around their plate and growl if you try to steal a French fry. (Well, we know one person, but he was raised by wolves and had 4 older brothers, each with a longer, faster arm than the next.) Polly is a puppy mill girl! She's used to fighting with two or more dogs for the food that was thrown in her crate.
Here's what Polly loves: She loves to have her belly rubbed. She loves to RUN like a jackrabbit around the yard. She loves to wrestle with other dogs. She loves Nylabones!
The ideal home for Polly, according to her foster mom: "Polly should have a home where the owners are at a minimum, somewhat active. I would prefer (but not require) a retired person or couple with no other dogs, or maybe one submissive dog. She is a very sweet dog but she is VERY needy. She needs some guidance for obedience and housebreaking. Her family doesn't necessarily need to be Frenchie-savvy but they should be familiar with living with active, too smart for their own good, "big for their britches" dogs.
Polly would love to go to work. She is very trainable. It would be wonderful to have someone home all day or have a mid-day visit from a dog-walker, but it's not required. We'd prefer a house and yard for her, but we'd consider an apartment if the owner is a big walker and will be sure to give Polly the exercise she really needs."
Here are some last words about Polly from her foster mom: "Polly is a very smart dog. She needs guidance and direction. She is already crate-trained and we are working on housebreaking. Just when you feel frustrated by her activity level, she smiles and shows her goofy side and you LAUGH! She is so darn cute! There is a constant smile on her face. If she is disciplined at all, she gets her feelings hurt. We are working on gentle reinforcement with her. Polly gets along with my geriatric senile dogs. They feel young and free again around her, but man, do they get tired easily! Polly is an exceptional girl. She needs an exceptional home. One with energy, patience and lots of love to give."
Polly is cracking them up in Louisiana. If you are fortunate and get to bring her home, you'd best book a spot on the Delta Queen and steam on down the river to fetch her, because she won't be shipped.
