Perseus has a bite history. When he was a year old (he is now 4) he bit an autistic child who came into his home. He and the child were unsupervised when the bite took place and no one is sure what happened. In foster care Perseus met several kids and was fine with them, but he does have a guarding instinct so his foster family makes sure there is plenty of “warming up” time when he meets new people – whether children or adults. He would do best in an adult only home, just because kids tend to have a “swinging door effect” on a household, with an influx of kids coming in and out. We wouldn’t want Perseus to get into any trouble.

Perseus is healthy and likes everyone he meets once they are introduced. However, he is protective against dogs or people outside his reach (such as through a fence or when he is on a tight leash.) His forever people could help him with this behavior through training. He would enjoy it, and training is a wonderful way for people to bond with their dogs.

Perseus can be a performer and a follower. He has learned to be submissive and follow his leaders in foster care, but likes to act dominant when going into his protective mode. He will need daily walks as he has energy to let out and will let it out barking in a frenzy after prey if not kept in check. Perseus is a medium to high energy frog who is crate-trained and housebroken (though he has once or twice marked when introduced into a new building.) He hasn’t had any formal training but he is smart and he already understands many things.

Once he is comfortable, Perseus really likes to play with toys. He loves attention and really enjoys the time spent playing with his people. He also likes to run around and play with other dogs his size. He loves to bark and chase squirrels and would do the same to cats if he were able. We’ll say no to kitties in his forever home.

Though it’s not strictly necessary, we know Perseus would thrive in a house with a yard. He loves to lay outside on a run or in a fenced yard for periods of time. He’s a little too vocal to be a happy tenant in an apartment building. He would love to have a “stay at home” person but is good in his crate and would be fine with a mid-day break. He is not a complainer.

Here’s what Perseus’ foster mom has to say about him: “Perseus is a sweetheart with a lot of love to give. He enjoys investigating his surroundings and sitting with his people. If he wants to be petted he nuzzles his head under your hand until you get the idea. Perseus is an easy dog to love and would be a wonderful friend for someone who has an interest in working with him to boost his confidence, reinforce his good behavior and help him learn that he doesn’t need to be in charge of “security”.

Perseus is in Maine being a good boy and waiting for his forever people to apply. If you want to take him home, plan to make the trip because we will not ship Perseus!
