Under the devoted love and excellent care of his foster family, hunky Newman has rambled his way onto the Available Page. Newman’s stunning good looks and boyish charm are not for the faint-of-heart—read on if you will, but have a seat ready if you feel yourself swoon!
Newman is one of those HAPPY and sweet-natured dogs. Newman loves playing with his toys or just mixing it up with his Frenchie siblings. He’s usually in motion but not the bouncing-of-the-wall-kind—he’s content playing in the house, the small yard, and loves walking on a leash!
Given this young prince’s activity level, it’s easy to forget his rough start with not one, but two, broken legs. The first break was in the femur of his right leg, which required surgery and was done prior to his coming to FBRN. Newman arrived in FBRN with a broken left leg, which may have been left unattended, as there was blood loss to the bone that resulted in deterioration to the femur. In foster care Newman had the top half of the femur removed. He does not have a ball and socket joint in the hip, which is now connected by muscle and tendons. His hip muscles were very atrophied and weak, but after lots of exercise and pool time with his foster family, he has been able to rebuild some of that strength. He still experiences some weakness in his hip, but it does not seem that this will be an ongoing issue. But, potential adopters should take note of this condition and be aware that he requires monitoring and may, at some point, require further care.
Newman’s only physical restriction as of late was not being able to jump up on things, but he has recently jumped up on the low lounge chairs by the pool. And, his foster mom reports that his muscles have been getting so strong that the boy now runs at top speed! She also says, “I believe he will be 100% one day given lots of love, attention and proper exercise. He’s like Forrest Gump…he has special legs!!”
Newman frequently wears out his playmates, and when his Frenchie friends pass out after a good game of play, Newman will happily occupy himself with his pull toys, his “frog” and chew toys. Newman loves all of the dogs he has met—from the 60-pound Weimaraner to the three-pound Yorkie; they are all friends to Newman! Sometimes, Newman can get too excited during play and will bark at others, but takes correction well and will need someone to continue to reinforce good behavior. Newman is also an excellent traveler. He is quiet and well behaved in the car, loves his booster car seat, and has gone on several long trips without any problems.
Newman is still a puppy, and has occasional mishaps on the rug. His accidents usually happen when he is too busy playing to ask to go outside! Newman also loves his crate, and will often put himself to bed. A good end to his busy day!
Newman would do best with a person or family that is active enough to give him lots of playtime. Because of his weak hips, Newman should not go to a home with small children, but older, dog-savvy children would be fine. Newman doesn’t have any experience with cats, so no cats, please. Newman would love another dog(s) in the home. If he can’t accompany his person to work, or if his people work outside the home, he’ll require another doggy pal to keep him company, and a mid-day walk would suit him fine. Apartment or house is both okay for Newman, as long as there is a fenced yard for him to play in.
Newman hasn’t had any formal obedience training, but he knows sit, down, shake and stay (well, sometimes!) Newman’s foster mama says he takes to new tricks quickly; he has learned to shake for treats! The boy gets so excited about getting treats that he will start throwing any foot at you that you will shake! Before you know it, he’s got both arms flaying in an attempt to please! It’s the Newman dance...What a goofball!
Newman has gained celebrity status with his extended family and around the neighborhood—and as we all know, every star has a vice or two! His foster mom says she’s been trying to curb his smoking addiction—that’s what she calls Newman’s bad habit of running around the yard with a “poo cigar” under his lip! Newman’s other vice is nibbling on the furniture, so he needs to be monitored during playtime.
His foster mom has this to say about Newman: “Newman is such a sweet little clown. So happy and playful. He loves his people and is very well behaved. I can’t say enough good things about this little frog. This boy is so special and will be missed very much. Even our cranky female Frenchie is very fond of Newman! This is a dream Frenchie and it will be one lucky family who is fortunate enough to be chosen to be his forever home.”
Strap the booster seat in and prepare for a road trip or plane excursion to Tennessee—Newman will make an excellent travel companion, and he will not be shipped.
