Please read the puppy mill info page before applying for Myrtle.
Sweet Myrtle was saved from an awful puppy mill situation and brought in to FBRN in sad shape. She was bred over and over, and for a lady of mature years, it really takes a toll on the body. Myrtle’s turnaround has been nothing short of miraculous, however. Fertile Myrtle no more, this darling girl is healthy and happy and ready for her new home.
Aside from occasional infections that she develops between her toes and a touch of arthritis in her hips, Myrtle shows few signs of her early years. Even those things don’t hold her back. Myrtle is mostly housebroken, but she does have occasional accidents. After spending the better part of a decade not being housebroken, she has made wonderful progress in this area. She will run to the door when she needs to go out, and you’d best be paying attention. It is only at the moments when her potty signals aren’t noticed that she’ll have an oopsie in the house. Myrtle is also crate trained and sleeps happily in a gated area overnight or when her people must be away from home.
Myrtle has been around children of various ages, but she’d probably do best in a home with older kids who are aware that she needs to be treated with care in her senior years. She hasn’t had any experience with cats, so it would probably be best for her to have a home without felines, just to make sure. She does like to spend time with other dogs, but as you can imagine, she didn’t have things of her own for most of her life, so she can be a bit protective of her bed and her toys. Her new owners would have to be cognizant of this and pay close attention to ensure that no grumpiness goes too far.
Myrtle is a mostly laid-back lady who doesn’t need a lot of exercise. She sleeps a lot and enjoys the comforts of a loving home in her retirement. Myrtle isn’t a cuddler per se, but she does seek out attention and enjoys to be scratched on and hugged when she asks. She’ll reward you by wiggling her little nubbin and smiling that patented Frenchie smile. Myrtle does like to make sure her yard is safe, so she’ll go on patrol and offer some barks if she sees anyone encroaching on her territory.
Myrtle does have one, shall we say, idiosyncrasy. She does enjoy a poo poo platter, a Scooby snack, a tootsie roll, if you will. In fact, she finds it to be such a delicacy that she will guard it and be none too pleased should another dog show interest in her little treat. While not her most attractive of qualities, it is something her forever home should be aware of.
Myrtle is a wonderful old girl who loves to chew on Nylabones, bark at the neighbor’s dog, eat, and sleep her days away. She’d be happy in almost any living situation because she gets along with other dogs, loves all people, and is very easy to please. She will need a fenced yard because she doesn’t do well on leash, and she will run. She’d do fine with someone who worked full time, as she can be left for around 6 hours at a time, but she would prefer a mid-day break. Better yet, she’d be pleased as punch to come to the office with you and sleep at your feet. Myrtle doesn’t ask for much, but she did make one request. Sweet Myrtle just hates the cold and would strongly prefer to live out her retirement years in a warm and sunny state.
Myrtle’s foster mom just thinks she’s the bomb and has this to say about her:
"Myrtle has captured our hearts over these last months. She is a brave little lady who has had a rough life. She deserves to live the rest of her life in comfort and love. She will occasionally go into “baby rhino” mode and toss a toy around. She makes me laugh when I see her act like a puppy. It makes me sad to think of all of the fun she missed during her puppy mill days. But, I’m so happy that she has this chance at a happy life. I truly believe that Myrtle knows she was saved. She rolls around on the floor and just looks like she’s saying “I love my life!” She runs to me each day when I come home from work and nudges my ankle. Myrtle will make a great addition to a lucky family."
If Myrtle sounds like the dame for you, get that application in! Myrtle is being fostered in Ohio and won’t be shipped.
