Maddie John was surrendered by her former owners due to a change in family circumstances. When she arrived in foster care she was a "bad breather" with lots of snorting and panting. FBRN had her palate re-sectioned and her nostrils widened and now she breathes like a proper frog, which is to say she pants after strenuous play sessions and when she is too hot. Interestingly, though Maddie was VERY claustrophobic during care rides when she first arrived, she has improved greatly since her surgery. Knowing she can catch her breath has allowed her to relax and endure (if not 100% enjoy) the ride!
This five year old brindle frog just LOVES people. She gets so dang excited when people enter the home, in fact, that she wants to jump all over them and cover them with Maddie kisses. Some people like this, some people don't. Her forever family may want to train her to curb her enthusiasm a little or risk their lifetime supply of silk stockings! Because she is so enthusiastic, we believe Maddie John could overwhelm little kids. Though she did not live with children in foster care we are sure she would love them. They should love her too, and be sturdy enough to withstand her exuberant greetings. We think kids over eight years would be Maddie-proof.
Maddie didn't meet any kitties in foster care, and we'd like to keep it that way. She has a pretty healthy prey drive.
This girl is an alpha female, and she can get her back up with other dogs, particularly around toys and food. Now that she can take a breath, she's begun to feel well enough to compete for affection, and she is getting into regular fights over attention from her foster mom. We'd prefer that she go to an only dog home unless you are really skilled at maintaining order with your dogs, or are willing to live with dogs in separate zones of the house.
In terms of activity, Maddie is "just right". She is always excited to see people, and she loves to play, but she isn't obsessive about it. "Smarter than the average frog". Maddie knows "go outside to pee" and "go to your home" (a baby gated area where she takes her meals). She can also give high fives with a big grin on her face! And although she is dominant around food and toys, she is otherwise submissive, and will back down in a hurry if you raise your voice a bit to the "I mean business" tone when you say her name.
Maddie is perfectly housetrained (will pretty much "go on command" when you take her out), and crate trained, although in foster care she was only crated during car rides. We don't think she's had any obedience training, but she is a quick little thing, and could probably learn as much as anyone cared to teach her.
Things Maddie John loves: Toys (all to herself). BELLY RUBS!
Maddie is an easy keeper and would fit well into a variety of home situations. Adults only or families with kids would be fine, as long as the kids are over 8. She would love to have someone home all day but can "hold it" for 4-6 hours so a mid-day break would work fine too. She would likely be a wonderful "take to work" companion, too, as she will settle at your feet for a nice long snooze. We would prefer that Maddie go to a home with a fenced yard, but if that's not available it's okay as long as she is always on lead. She will take off after a squirrel in nothing flat, otherwise. A house, town home or apartment would all be fine accommodations for Miss Maddie. She aims to please.
A few final words about Maddie John:
"Maddie had a tough first five years of her life since she really couldn't breathe except through her mouth. All that has changed for her since she had her palate and nostrils trimmed. She's adjusted nicely and now breathes normally. Maddie craves affection! She'll lie at your feet constantly if you let her but really prefers belly rubs. She would probably do best as an "only" dog. Maddie is a very pretty Frenchie too, with her brindle markings over each eye. She would love to have a home where she could be loved by everyone since she has so much love to give!"
If you like giving belly rubs as much as Maddie John likes getting them, submit your application right away! Then get set to take a plane, train or automobile to Southwestern PA, because Maddie John will not be shipped!
