LEROY HAS A BITE HISTORY
Please join us in welcoming Leroy Brown to the Available Page (again!) Leroy first came into FBRN as a puppy mill rescue needing neck surgery, which he has completely recovered from. Unfortunately, Leroy wasn’t a good match for his first adoptive home, and a divorce led his second adoptive home to return him to FBRN. But neither storm nor sleet could keep Leroy away from the love and care of FBRN volunteers. Leroy’s foster dad braved driving through a snowstorm to retrieve Leroy from his second home. The bonding of a road trip also included a detour to a motel, where man and beast slept (and where Leroy showed off his superior snuggling skills!) Leroy has been loved and nurtured by his foster family who cherish him—and his quirks! Yes, the boy has a rough edge or two, but Leroy’s foster family is quite smitten with him. And while they are quite sad at the thought that their snuggle companion is ready for the next part of his journey, they are confident that he will bring love to and be loved by his forever home.
Leroy is a sweetie with his person—he is really attached to his foster dad—and is good with the family. Leroy’s favorite pastime is snuggling. He is an excellent cuddler! Leroy is also extremely food-motivated—it’s believed that he would brave hot coals for a piece of challah! He also enjoys playing with Kongs and tennis balls, but really, the boy just wants to sleep beside his person.
Leroy requires a gentle but firm and consistent alpha owner, one who is patient and committed to seeing Leroy make steady progress, not sudden big leaps. Because Leroy is unpredictable, he needs to be the only dog in the home, though dog-savvy cats with places for retreat may be considered. Because of his bite history, no kids please. Leroy can be animal aggressive, and at times his aggression is directed towards people as well. He has a bite history, and it is likely that he will continue to have a snappy attitude over certain things. Other animals and people have felt his teeth, but he’s not drawn any blood in the six months he has been with his foster family. Potential adopters should be aware of and prepared to work with Leroy to minimize this behavior and reward his good boy conduct. Leroy is a frog with some challenges, though he has made considerable improvement while under the care of his foster family and he has the potential for more good work. And lest you are beginning to form the impression that Leroy is the Big Bad Wolf in disguise, keep in mind that he is extremely sweet to his person and is a real companion Frenchie. And although his protective behavior is not to be encouraged, on one occasion Leroy stopped a home intrusion! Even though he’s small in size, he is persistent in his unrelenting defense of his foster family and home, and had the intruder begging to be let out!
Leroy has been fine hanging out at home while his foster family goes to work, but it would be great if his forever person or family can stop in during lunchtime or better yet, work from home. It is possible that employment may be in Leroy’s future, but only if you are able to supervise him closely and can stay aware of his body language to avoid the possibility of any untoward behavior.
Leroy’s primary health concern is a bad knee, which will probably require some corrective surgery in the future, but is not an immediate concern. Otherwise, the boy is in good health.
Leroy is housebroken but on occasion has made angry wee-wee on something inside. He doesn’t care for the crate, but his dislike of it isn’t aggressive. Leroy hasn’t had any formal obedience training, but would benefit from working with a trainer who uses gentle methods.
It is very preferable that Leroy’s future home has a fenced yard—he won’t return on command, not even for his favorite treats! He wouldn’t do so well in an apartment in the city with lots of close encounters.
Leroy’s foster dad would like you to know this about him:
“Leroy is a quirky and sometimes difficult dog. But we love him to pieces, he’s charming and sweet. He hops and dances for treats and dinner and spins around with joy for attention or food. We would absolutely adopt this boy if he could get along with other dogs, but since rescuing and fostering is a major part of our lives he just isn’t a good fit in our house. He follows me like a little shadow and seems to just love being tucked against my side whenever possible.”
Leroy is snuggling up with his people in SE South Carolina, though he regularly accompanies his dad to SE Michigan for work. Leroy would love to bond with you in a road trip, and like all FBRN dogs, will not be shipped.
