Watch out! Another beauty has hit the Available page! All creamy and dreamy, this retired breeder, Latika (pronounced Lah-tih-kuh), was adopted along with one of her puppies, and then surrendered when the care of multiple dogs became too overwhelming.
Latika is just an all-around happy girl. She loooooves to be around people. Any people! She did wonderfully with a visiting two-year-old; she planted herself next to her and sat patiently for pets. Latika can’t get enough attention from anyone and will lie down and snuggle up next to any person, anywhere, anytime.
Chew toys are on top on Latika’s Favorite Toy list! Natural bones and Nylabones are her favorites. She is also always up for a walk but is just as happy to lounge around all day with her people. Latika is generally laid back and adaptable and happy to be doing whatever her family wants to do.
Beautiful Latika was originally reported to have severe allergies, but Latika has only very mild allergies in her Iowa foster home. Her allergies may stay the same or get worse depending on where Latika relocates to, so any potential adopter should be prepared to maintain her comfort. Right now, Latika eats a grain free diet and takes Benadryl when she shows any signs of paw licking or itchies and that seems to fix her right up. Due to her allergies, Latika requires weekly ear cleanings as her ears tend to get dirty fairly quickly, but she is not prone to ear infections.
During her breeding days, Latika was reported to have a spinal infection that rendered her temporarily paralyzed. She was successfully treated but has a resultant wobbly gait. Though walking is not a problem and she's not in pain, maneuvering stairs or climbing is difficult for her, so a one level home would be ideal for Latika.
Like all gorgeous creatures, Latika sometimes likes to have things on her terms. Latika was reported to be dog aggressive in her previous home but she absolutely adores the other dogs in her foster home, and after a week of slow introductions, gets along wonderfully with them. Latika sleeps and plays with all her foster fur siblings without any issues. The only time any snarkiness comes out is when she meets unfamiliar dogs. Any potential adopter should not allow a strange dog to rush Latika and a week of slow introductions should be conducted to allow Latika to become familiar with any new family pets. Due to her previous spinal infection, should a fight break out, Latika could be badly hurt. Beyond that, Latika has no bite or temperament issues.
Other dogs in her home are fine as long as she was given the chance to get to know them before actually meeting them, as stated before, usually a 1-2 weeks of introduction time is best for her. Calm, laid back dogs would be best. First time Frenchie owners would be fine for Latika, but first time dog owners may not be suitable for her. Due to her unfamiliar dog aggression she needs a confident owner who understands dogs and can help manage and continue working with her.
Latika is housebroken…with one caveat. Due to the fact that she is a retired breeder she cannot hold her bladder very long and needs frequent potty breaks (every 1-2hrs) while she is out and about. She's not incontinent, and she does give signals. Her foster mom has learned that she signals her need to go out by getting up and walking around a lot or walking around by the door that leads to the backyard- Latika will hold it as long as she can - and when her signal is missed is usually when an indoor accident occurs. Another reason Latika needs frequent potty breaks is that she has the tendency to consume large amounts of water. Her foster mom says she will drink and drink and drink until she vomits, if allowed. When redirected from the water bowl (if she is taking an extra-long drink) she will stop and foster mom reports she is getting better with this over time. Otherwise, with frequent potty breaks, Latika should be considered potty trained!
Latika is also crate trained and is wonderful in her kennel. She is reliable, potty-wise, up to 6 hours and should always be let outside to empty her bladder right before being kenneled. Beyond that she will need to be let out for a break.
Latika would love to join any type of family! She loves people of all shapes and sizes so any sort of family combination would be great. Gentle, calm, dog savvy children over 8 would be preferable due to her previous spinal infection. A one level home with a yard where she could be easily let out multiple times during the day would be perfect! A stay at home person is always great – what Frenchie wouldn’t love their person home all day with them? – But Latika would do well with a mid-day potty break or dog walker as well. She loves being around people so she would most likely be fine as an office greeter too.
Latika’s foster mom has enjoyed having her! Here’s what she has to say about this stunning girl: “Latika is such a lover and loves to be around everyone!! She would be a great addition to almost any family! She has the sweetest, most caring eyes, and when she looks up at you with them, your heart melts! She is very laid back, but still likes to play too. It would be good for her to have a family that doesn't mind setting some boundaries and rules for her because she does need someone to be her leader and is a real people pleaser! She just needs to take it slow with meeting any new dogs she doesn't know, but once she gets to know them, she usually does great with them! If you feel you can give her the loving/caring home she deserves, please submit an application for her! You won't be disappointed! :)”
If you think yours is the perfect home for Latika, please apply for her. She will be spending the Holidays, waiting for her perfect family, in Iowa. So, load up the car for a road trip because Latika will not be shipped!
