Keeper is a retired breeder who was surrendered because her owner was experiencing some health issues.
Keeper is a kitty-friendly, healthy older girl. When she first arrived in foster care, the resident dogs made her a bit nervous, but now that she has settled in, she is doing well. There are five dogs in her foster home, ranging in size from 6 – 150 lbs, and she shows a marked preference for the little dogs. The dogs in her home are all mature dogs, six years and over, and she would be ok with a laid-back, low energy or older dog, we think.
Keeper loves her walks and she walks very nicely on a lead. She’s playful and curious and loves to be with people! Keepers favorite things are fuzzy slippers, snacks and stuffed toys! She can hear a wrapper being unwrapped a mile away, and she will beg at the table.
Keeper is a good girl in the house, though following the transition to her foster home, she did have a few accidents. Applicants should be prepared for some nervous accidents for some period of time after she arrives. Like a toilet trained toddler, some dogs regress in their housetraining under stressful conditions.
Her foster mom is working on basic commands like sit, down, come. Keeper is already crate-trained. She’s a little mouthy during wrassle time, but never bites or nips.
In terms of her forever home, we think Keeper would be fine in an apartment as long as she could have a walk or two each day. She’s an active 8 year-old, but she’s fairly quiet, so an apartment is suitable. She should be all right in just about any kind of home, though we haven’t tested her with any children. Since we don’t know about kids, and because she’s 8 years old, we think older kids would be a better bet than young children. She’d love to go to the office, and she’d make an excellent receptionist once she has had a bit more obedience training. She could adjust to life with a family that works outside the home, but remember that she is an active dog, so applicants who work outside the home should be sure to mention how they plan to meet that need for activity each day.
Here are some last words about Keeper from her foster mom: “I would describe Keeper as a busy girl but she is very under control. She needs more obedience training to really get all the enjoyment you can out of her. Right now she has selective hearing and comes only when it is her choice. We are working on this. Has no interest in playing with the other dogs but loves to play with toys. She loves to go for car rides and is polite while she rides. I’d say Keeper is a pretty easy keeper.”
