Please read the puppy mill link before applying for Guido.
Mmmmmm, Guido! Look at this handsome dude with the cute little grin. Will you be the lucky one to walk the debonair Mr. G down your street? Heads will turn, and folks will smile with approval. Funny thing, despite his manly good looks Guido was not a successful Casanova. At his previous job as a stud dog, he showed insufficient interest in the ladies. Released from duty and neutered, he has made a very successful transition to life as a pet while in foster care. Now, he is yearning to charm your heart and find a permanent position right there on your couch.
Guido does come with a little additional baggage. He has a condition called Degenerative Lumbar Scoliosis with pinched nerves, which has resulted in lameness and muscle atrophy on his right rear side. There is a very good chance that his condition will remain just as it is. He will have good days and bad days, like your dear Aunt Nellie with the bad back. On the bad days, pain management might be required. His forever home could explore alternative therapies to make sure he is always comfortable. In the worst case scenario, more disc fluid would be released and the condition will worsen. Then he may develop incontinence.
Guido is curious and as mischievous as all get out. But he needs a mellow home so he doesn’t risk hurting his back. A very busy environment with young children or dogs would be too over the top for this guy. Mature teenagers would appreciate his companionship. His foster mom characterizes him as easygoing with no people aggression issues whatsoever. Furthermore, we have good news, kitty people! The resident cat is very dog-savvy and does not present herself as prey. Guido in turn just admires her from afar.
Guido is a little ambivalent about other dogs. He enjoys their company, but never learned how to play with them. For the most part he has done well with others, regardless of age and gender. But when there were a little spats with his foster brother, a Boxer, he was the instigator and he will fight back if challenged. His foster mom also watches him closely when he has a bone. She states that he has not shown obvious possession aggression, but will give direct eye contact to another dog approaching him when he has one.
He definitely is not food aggressive though, because he really is not a “foodie”. He is not a very good eater and is currently needs to be plumped up a bit. He might be a good candidate for free feeding if he were an only dog. He certainly wouldn’t gorge himself. Au contraire, his family will have to monitor his intake to make sure he eats enough to keep from losing weight. We should all have this problem, eh?!
Silly Guido loves to pull clothes, pillows and blankets around the house. He also excels at shredding paper and toys. He’s not exactly destructive, just mischievous and needs to work on his boundaries. Because he shreds, he should be kept in a crate when not supervised. He will complain when no one is there and he is crated, but he sleeps quietly in his crate next to his foster mom’s bed at night.
Guido would be a great go-to-work pal! He loves car rides, walks, and being by his person’s side. If you can’t make that happen he would be okay at home while you work, but because of his back he shouldn’t stay in his crate more than four hours at a shot. If you work, an apartment would not be the best for him because he barks when crated. An explorer, he enjoys his fenced yard and that will be preferred for him.
An apt pupil, Guido is doing great with his housebreaking skills and is learning some basic commands. He is enrolled in an obedience class starting the first of May. With good fortune on his side, he will find his forever home very soon and his new family can continue his training.
Give Guido some belly rubs and butt scratches and he will flash you his toofie smile with excitement. Are you ready to welcome this great frog into your home? He is waiting for you right smack dab in the heartland of America. You’ll need to work out how to come to Nebraska and get him, as he will not be shipped.
