Ernest was pulled from a shelter who felt he was too aggressive to safely handle, and had scheduled him for Euthanasia unless a rescue would take him. Our volunteer swept in, scooped him up, dropped him off with another volunteer on the way to transport him North to a foster home and guess what? No aggression. Just an awful skin infection from a too-tight collar.
Once the zillion fleas were washed away, we found that Ernie is a great dog! He’s a very healthy high-energy Frenchie. He wants a home where his need for activity can be met with long walks and plenty of play. If he doesn’t get exercise, he starts chewing things. Like furniture.
Ernest is not a good choice for a family with little kids or people who leave things lying around. He loves to chew plastic, and he has jaws of steel. Untidy kids will bum out, and it is possible that Ernest could swallow or choke on something. Also, we’ve discovered he’s a door-dasher, and little kids just can’t keep the door closed reliably. Not a slam on kids, just an observation.
Ernest would make your kittie’s life a misery. No kitties. But Ernest would like to play with another playful dog, and would love a playmate who appreciates his sense of humor! He’s not so good with dominant females or dominant males, so your dog should be mellow and easygoing.
Ernest really wants to please his people, and he loves to keep busy. He’d be a great agility or obedience dog. He knows sit and he’ll come when you call. He’s a lot better about marking since his neuter, but he’s not reliably housetrained. He is very puppyish, and if he’s doing something he likes better than going out, he’ll piddle. Keeping him on a schedule really helps with accidents. He’s crate trained, but he doesn’t like it and will cry for a few minutes because there’s nothing going ON in the crate. All the good stuff happens OUT THERE! He’s more terrier than bulldog in his energy level.
If you can wear him out before you go to work, Ernie would be a wonderful greeter at the office! He’ll destroy a toy a day, and go home feeling like he’s accomplished something. He could have go to work parents, but someone should come home and throw a toy for him at lunchtime or he’ll go nutty.
We’d love a home with a yard for Ernest, but the yard should be very safe and he shouldn’t be left alone to get in trouble. He really is the Elephant’s Child and could not be more ‘satiably curious. If you haven’t got a yard, a commitment to at least one long walk in the morning to wear him out and a shorter walk or two in the evening would be required. It’s for everybody’s good.
Some last words from his foster mom: “Ernest is such a dear soul. He loves to learn things and find out what’s in here and what’s behind there—it’s like having a two-year old in the house! He loves to sit beside you and get a belly rub or his neck scratched. He’s a hilarious little clown and very lovable and gentle. There is not an aggressive bone in his body. I can’t believe we almost lost him. Great, great funny little dog.”
If Ernest is your cup of tea, you should prepare to pick him up in Western Oregon where he is destroying stuffies at a shocking rate. He will not be shipped.
