Dorje (pronounced Dor-djay) means “thunderbolt” in Tibetan. Dorje and his friend Bohdi were picked up from a shelter after their marking took their buyer by surprise, and their seller wouldn’t take them back. FBRN noticed that Dorje’s breathing was a bit labored so we took him to the vet for surgery on his nares and palate (and to get the big snip, of course.) His foster mom reports that his breathing is much better even just a few days after the surgery, and that he is housebroken and has not marked in her house. As with any Frenchie, he will have to be monitored so he doesn’t overheat, but otherwise his health is good.
Dorje is a people lover! His personality is very laid-back. He is a great snuggler, and likes to sleep under the covers as close as he can get to his human. His Foster Mom says “Dorje is a well-behaved, well-adjusted guy. He wanted to sleep with me, but I try to make sure the foster dogs understand they are at the bottom of the pack so they get along with all my six girls. Consequently, I make them stay out of the bed. He slept on his bed on the floor for a couple of days, then he curled up on the footstool beside my bed (it's there for my small dogs) then during the middle of the night he sneaked up to the very corner beside my head and lay perfectly still on about 8 inches of bed so he wouldn't get caught! I fell in love, of course, when I woke the next morn and he was staring deeply into my eyes. What are you going to do? He now sleeps curled against my chest or under the covers.”
Dorje gets along with most other dogs, and playing with a canine sibling would be a great way for him to get some exercise and socialization. He stomps the other dogs in bed, so tiny, fragile dogs would not be good companions for him. On the other hand, he loves to play with the Boxer in his foster home so a larger dog companion would be a good choice. A fenced yard is required for Dorje and his friends to romp in.
As far as other animals in the home however, that is another story. Dorje has not been exposed to cats, so for kitty’s safety we will say no. He shows far too much interest in the parakeets in his foster home (which are thankfully high out of his reach), so we’ll have to say no to bird households as well.
Any apartment or house would work for Dorje as long as he has canine companions. He could stay at home with his friend as long as they had a mid-day break from a pet sitter, or Dorje could learn to go to the office with someone. His easygoing temperament means that he calms down nicely after the initial excitement of a new environment.
Some final words from his foster mom: "Dorje loves stuffed toys, but he doesn't tear them up. When you come home, he runs to the door with a toy in his mouth as if to say, “Look what I found while you were gone!" He understands "Stay". He wants to go with me anytime I pick up my purse, but if I say "No, you have to stay", he gets it. He doesn't try to run away, he comes when called. He doesn't need to go to the dog park, or jog, or run along with a bicycle. But, he is a people lover, so he needs someone who wants to sit beside him on the couch with his head in their lap."
Dorje is snuggled up in Northern Florida and will not be shipped.
