Barnaby has hit the available page and is looking for an adult only household with a strong leader who enjoys walking and is able to set consistent rules and boundaries. Is your home able to give him the structure he’s looking for? Please read on and see if you are the perfect companion for Barnaby!
This handsome boy was surrendered when his previous owner could no longer deal with the behavior issues between Barnaby and the other resident canine. After exhibiting unwanted behavior in his foster home as well, Barnaby was evaluated by a trainer and has been working hard at becoming a happy, confident pet. He now interacts daily with all breeds and sizes of dogs with no problem and enjoys playing. He can be a great buddy to another dog and would love to have a playmate in his forever home, so long as he has a strong leader to set boundaries for him.
A happy-go-lucky guy, Barnaby just loves everyone he meets! However, a calm, quiet, child-free home is the best environment for him, as he reacts to commotion and excitement by snapping or nipping at toes and fingers. He can also be quite stubborn and reactive if asked to do something he doesn’t feel like doing. Sometimes Barnaby will show excessive affection, which is also a sign of dominance, and this can be misread by a child. Children, just being children, may inadvertently cause him to react, and since Barnaby likes to attempt to assert himself and be the king of his castle, kids will not understand how to redirect this behavior.
The ideal home for Barnaby is any place, really, so long as he was given adequate exercise in order to tire his body and mind. He is a happy guy and doesn’t need much beyond long daily walks, romps with a canine buddy, a cozy bed and some antlers to knosh on. It is preferred that Barnaby’s forever family live in the NE Georgia area so that his current trainer can help with his transition into his new home. For information on the training Barnaby has been undertaking and to help prepare for a life with this gorgeous guy, please click on this link: https://uscanine.com. In your application, please describe your experience working with reactive dogs. If you have a vet or trainer who will serve as a reference, we'd love to know about it.
Barnaby is both housebroken and crate trained but is not the companion for the average person. A quick romp in the backyard for a potty break will not be enough for this boy. A strict routine will be very important for his unique personality and overall happiness. Once Barnaby is certain that his person is the pack leader, is confident and comfortable that his person is taking charge, Barnaby is a sweet, submissive guy who will roll over for belly rubs. He needs authority, routine and regular daily exercise of two two-mile walks (am and pm) to remain mellow and less reactive.
If his person works outside the home, Barnaby would do fine waiting at home, provided he got a mid day walk. He loves car rides, so a fabulous treat would be going to work with his person every day! A busy, office environment would not suit him, as it would trigger his reactive side, but if you work in a quiet setting, then Barnaby would love to join you!
Like many of our Frenchie friends, Barnaby has some mild health issues. He has moderate allergies which are being maintained on a high quality grain free diet and once daily Zyrtec. Barnaby also has a birth defect in his knee/hock area. It does not require surgery nor does it hinder him from his normal activities. In fact, he walks two miles twice a day! He currently takes a glucosamine supplement to keep his joints healthy. In addition, he has a very deep, inverted tail that needs a good weekly cleaning to avoid any infection from developing in the folds. No biggies; just a few things any prospective forever home should be aware of!
Here are some words from Barnaby’s foster mom: “Barnaby is a slightly insecure but happy fellow who needs firm leadership to control excitability. His excitement is not displayed by jumping or racing around. He becomes excited by strange noises or by asking him to do something different. He will definitely challenge his new person after about 10 days but as long as they take charge right from the start he will settle in comfortably at his new home. He would love to have a nice housemate to spend all his time with and be his companion. He is a delightful and handsome boy. Barnaby is a love bug and wishes for his person to make rules and set boundaries so he doesn’t need to control his world. His eyes say how much he loves you and really just wants to please you. He will make a wonderful pet for the right person.”
Do you think you’re the right person for a love bug as wonderful as Barnaby? If so, then please apply for him! But please live in the NE Georgia area and be prepared to pick him up, because that’s where Barnaby is waiting and he will not be shipped!
FBRN does not ship dogs as cargo. Except in rare or unusual cases, adopters are expected to pick up their dogs from their foster family. In rare or unusual cases, FBRN may be able to assist in transporting a dog to a volunteer near the adopter's home, but the expense of transporting the dog must be the responsibility of the adopting party.
